For more than 10 years, GERES, a French NGO, has been working to develop the New Lao Stove (NLS), which can be either made of clay or metal.

The NLS stove costs from $2 to $4 (United States dollars) and saves 21 per cent of biomass compared to the traditional Lao stove that cost around $1 to $2. Using charcoal, the NLS provides the cheapest cooking energy unit in the market, while reducing the consumption of non-renewable biomass. GERES worked with producers and retailers to develop the NLS sector, and helped to promote the benefits of the NLS to end users.

Since 2003, more than 2,000,000 NLS have been produced and sold, and more than 1,300, 000 carbon credits have been issued.
